PERFECT SPRING DAY

(for allen ginsberg)

they say
that when a poet dies
on a perfect spring day
by nightfall
night really falls
& the sky shuts down

they say
that when a poet dies
on a perfect spring day
perfect morning
when sun & vineshadows creep thru
the narrow window
& illuminate the walls
with their wisdom
by nightfall
we all fall
backward
as time springs
foward
one more
time
& metaphors
are buried by the light

& the light
in a most unethical &
sophisticated way
lingers all that much longer
not because it wants to
but because it has to

they say that when the poet's
gone
all the rocks will roll away
from the caves of our
mouthes
& we shall speak freely for the
first time
about
the rhyme & reason &
the why & wherefore
& the gorgeous glorious &
ugly truth

they say that when a poet dies
the sky cries
& the hours change
& the rocks roll
& the words drop
& the world goes on
despite its imperfections

& still it is a perfect
perfect day.
