BEWARE "FAST FOOD"
COMPUTER STORES

Sorry to hear about this Al.
When I charge people $100 for the work I do, I guarantee my work
unequivocally. If your child was
sick, would you take him/her to a discount doctor to save a few bucks?
I would wager the answer is NO. My
$100/hr becomes a bargain when all things are considered.
So why would anyone think that CompUSA or Staples or any
other "fast food" computer store would give you a bargain on knowledge
which does not come easy? I don't
have a clue.
Caveat Emptor is right.
Common sense should prevail and tell anyone that CompUSA employees don't
make enough money to know their ass from an EIDE interface, and trust me, they
don't. Spread the word. . .
Best regards,
Bill Anderson, CsD (Doctor Of Computing)

STUDENT COMPLAINT
Subject: House Bill 2218: NEIU, the Legislature and
Misrepresentation (fwd)
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 22:27:10 -0500 (CDT)
From: Yahale R Yadede <Y-Yadede@neiu.edu>
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com
I learned on April 16, 1999 that legislation, HB 2218,
had already passed the House over a month before, imposing changes on the
position which I currently hold, Student Member of the Board of Trustees of
Northeastern Illinois University (which has seven members appointed by the
Governor and one member elected by students).
Among other provisions, the Student Trustee would be required to be an
undergraduate, thus eliminating the eligibility of graduates, and would be
limited to only one term of one year, while on the other hand, officers of the
Board would have their terms extended to two years.
Although Board Chair Dan Goodwin and NEIU President Salme Steinberg have
official responsibilities to follow policies set by the Board of Trustees, they
did not bother with niceties like seeking approval from the Board for policies
changing the rules governing itself. On
March 3, 1999 Steinberg appeared as a proponent of the legislation in the House
Higher Education Committee and on April 21 Goodwin appeared as a proponent in
the Senate Education Committee.
Steinberg's action was not made known to Trustees at any
meeting either before or after March 3. Nor
was Goodwin's appearance and action as a proponent made known to Trustees.
I only learned of the legislation's existence by receiving a State
Government publication summarizing many pieces of legislation.
Four students, including myself, went to Springfield, to
the April 21 hearing. Senator Arthur
Berman roundly condemned Board Chair Goodwin, saying to him "Shame on
you!"
In spite of Berman's and democrats' concern about the
abuse of proper procedure and the rights of students, Committee Chair Dan Cronin
spoke to the effect that the sponsors in the House must have known what they
were doing when they sponsored it and got it passed, so he insisted on going
forward and passed it in Committee, 6-4.

PS: this is on the agenda of the Illinois Board of Higher
Education Student Advisory Committee, which represents students throughout
Illinois, for our June 5 meeting. ##

A NEW LITERARY SEARCH ENGINE
Subject: Pilot-Search.com - the new starting point for
literary searches

LACEY, WA - May 20, 1999 (PM) -- The online literary
world is complex. Great electronic
resources await fiction writers, poets, screenwriters, songwriters, journalists,
and others, but where are they? In
the past, long link lists at prominent literary sites and broad categories at
macro search engines have been the only help, but often these tedious searches
brought back poor results or none at all. A
group of writers and literary scholars who were tired of this problem created
Pilot-Search, http://www.pilot-search.com, the new source for online literary
searches.
Pilot-Search.com is a free online search engine -
comprised strictly of literary links. Pilot
includes over 10,000 searchable links. With
over 250 categories Pilot covers Book Reviews, Interviews, individual writers
like Tennessee Williams, Ghost
Writing Services, e-Text, MFA Programs, Short Story Contests, and much more.
Pilot links to the internal pages of big sites like Salon, Project
Gutenberg, and the New York Times Book Review, but it also links to the pages of
smaller sites like Georgejr.com, Scribendi!, and E-Script Workshop. Each day in the Featured Pages section, Pilot-Search
spotlights five worthwhile articles or sites.
Pilot also has an up-to-date Events Calendar for happenings on- and
off-line.
Pilot-Search.com will celebrate its official launch on
June 1st, but users are invited to take a sneak peek at the fully functional
site now online. Registering all
individual articles, literature, interviews, services, and other literary URLs
is not only welcome but strongly suggested.
Just go to http://www.pilot-search.com, and click "Add a

FROM SWEDEN AGAIN
Subject: Re: Hello!

From: Gustav Persson <gustav__persson@hotmail.com>
To: blackj@bigmagic.co
Dear Al "blacklisted journalist" Aronowitz!
I'm so grateful you replied to my letter!
I hope you'll reply to this letter as well! :-)
But I'm from sweden, so I didn't understand everything you wrote! :-(
But if you'd like to publish my email on a webpage, then just do it!
Of course I'll let you do that without having to pay or anything (if that
was your point)! :-) I too think
that this world is too greedy, just look at how the internet has changed,
everyone's trying to make money by selling books, cds, cars, arranging auctions
etc. Why can't people enjoy giving away things for free?
On my homepage I have a lot of free music, free programs and games!
Here's the address http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/6795/gustav.htm.
I have a lot of facts and soundfiles with Beatles, Oasis, Dylan etc.
Please visit my Dylan biography (and free mp3 page) at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Crete/6795/dylan.htm. Where in the text could I write something about you and what
you meant to the meeting between Beatles and Dylan? You know that better than anyone I'm sure!
Since I'm from Sweden I will hopefully never buy anything from Comp USA!
Are you jewish? Just
wondering (your lastname sounds jewish) since I admire the jewish people and
what they've contributed to the world! :-)
Bye! /Gustav ##

ABOUT CUBA

From: "Greg Barry, MCP" <gbarry@nb.net>
To: <info@blacklistedjournalist.com>
Dear Mr. Aronowitz,
I came across your site the other day while doing a
search. I would like to tell you
that I really enjoy the articles you have there, especially those from Manuel
Menendez on Cuba. I have visited
the Island twice (illegally, of course), to visit friends and to get a 'taste'
of what the place is all about. Needless
to say, don't believe the shit some people say that it is 'the perfect
democracy' 'cause it sure as hell ain't! Please
relay my thanks to him. More needs
to be said about that tortured land! Thank
you very much.
Sincerely
Greg Barry ##

QUESTION FOR MANUEL
Subject: Something to ask Manuel
Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 18:04:57 -0400
From: "Greg Barry, MCP" <gbarry@nb.net>
To: <info@blacklistedjournalist.com>
AL: I am
about half way thru 'The Saga of Manuel Menendez' and I have a question that I
would like you to pass on to Manuel.
As quoted in the article:
In 1975," he wrote, "I joined Radio Havana, the
regime's official shortwave station."
He describes himself as having been an "efficient apparatchnik,"
although he "always avoided entering the Party."
"In 1978 I was ordered by the deputy-director, Jose
Prado, to write an editorial about the 'violations of human rights in the United
States.' I was in a small office adjoining the main newsroom, with three of my
colleagues. By then I was fed up
with the Castro regime, and was leading a sort of schizophrenic life, pretending
what I didn't feel. I could not
contain myself any longer, and exploded. I made a remark to the effect that
'these fucks have the gall of talking about human rights and they are violating
each and every one of them.' One or
more of my colleagues denounced me.
In my clandestine travels to Cuba (I did not get a
licence from our Treasury department) I made the acquaintance of several people
who work with Radio Havana Cuba. I
would like to know if he knew Arnoldo Coro, who was the co-founder of the
station. Arnie, as he likes to be
called, told me that he was not a member of the Party, either, but manages to
hold a high stature not only within the station, but also in other circles.
He is also very knowledgeable about what is going in behind the scenes as
it relates to Cuban/US relations.
Rule number one when traveling in that country for me has
been that things are not always as they appear.
If Manuel knows him and could share some background info, it would be
appreciated. Thanks very much.
Keep up the good work with your site!!
Greg ##

LINDA WAS FABULOUS!
Subject: Linda McCartney

From: NFrankDir@aol.com
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com
I read an excerpt from you article on Linda McCartney and
absolutely loved it!
I think she was a fabulous woman and has inspired me in
many of the ways I live my life. Its
great that you shared your feelings about her with the public as I feel she was
only treated "somewhat" fairly by the press and public since her
death.
You are reaching the people!
Cheers!
