Sorry
fools, Louis Armstrong is the most beautiful human to have been given
birth
onto north America and to then walk about its face. Miles is the dipshit, I would give the last two years of
however many I am supposed to live to have been able to see him play dear old
southland at terra blues on la guardia in the village.
I read your article to see which cigar Armstrong enjoyed not to
understand yous to be morally bankrupt trifling no-count pieces of mierda. ##

DARLENE
FIFE BEING SUED!
Subject: Darlene
Fife & Surregional Press Sued!

From: "Dennis Formento" <mesechabe@hotmail.com>

Yes,
indeed, friends, it finally happened. Today
Surregional Press got the pleadings in the case of Dorothy C. Higson v. Darlene
Fife et al. Ms. Higson believes
that Darlene's book Portraits From Memory:
New Orleans in the Sixties, recently published by Surregional, has caused
her mental anguish, public embarassment, and financial loss, and constitutes an
invasion of her privacy. She is
suing for financial damages & "injunctive relief," i.e., we would
not be allowed to sell or distribute the book.
Her
husband, who remains a friend of Darlene & of Surregional Press &
supports us all the way, warned me that she doesn't have a sense of humor. Or
something to that effect.
This
person had the good fortune to marry (in the 70s) a heroic Englishman who moved
to Mississippi in the 60s to work in Freedom Summer. Subsequently he moved to New Orleans to join the struggle
here, and associated with Darlene Fife, Robert Head, and others who published
NOLA Express, possibly the South's greatest underground newspaper.
The pleadings are full of factual inaccuracies, such as Mrs. Higson's
belief that there are intimate details about their personal lives in the book.
In fact, Darlene knows very little about her from those days, & the
Higsons were not married until '73.
Dorothy's
name does not appear anywhere in the book.
Her husband virtually disappears from Portraits from Memory after 1971.
She alleges his association in the book with "assassins and
arsons," which has no basis in fact whatsoever.
There's a lot of other crazy shit in the pleadings too.
The
most wonderful irony is that Dorothy's lawyer has his offices in the house on
Canal Street where I lived in 1978-1980, in a commune mostly made up of
Oystershell Alliance/safe energy alternatives activists.
I got busted for possession of crabgrass there.
We smoked it in the kitchen, yeah.
Oh,
another thing... Portraits From Memory also has the privilege of being
segregated from other less controversial books in the original Maple Street Book
Shop, due to a certain Playboy parody we reprinted from the original NOLA
Express. Damn, but this publishing
bit sure is fun!
Stay
tuned for further proceedings.
Dennis

Al,
Was
forwarded The Blacklisted Journalist URL by John Bennett of Vagabond http://www.eburg.com/~vagabond/main/hotp.html.
He gave you a rave review, and now that I've checked out Col56Sect1, I have to
agree. Dynamic stuff!
I
run a web zine in Australia, with a political page dedicated to the humiliation
of Australia's version of the Rebublican Party (URL below). Here they are called
the Australian Liberal Party. They used to be quasi-liberal, but for some time
have been a Monarchist version of the worst aspects of the Republicans: born to
rule, award-winning hubris, genuine hatred of battlers,
From
your Col 56 I went to The Guardian and downloaded the two articles from their 24
Dec 2000 edition, which I intend to publish next issue. Christ, what a scene in
UmErUhca!
I
also intend to put up a links page in the future, and will include yourself and
of course Michael Moore. Any others?
Cheers,
HH
PS:
Do you know Gene Bloom? George Montgomery? If so, are they still around? I used
to go under the moniker of "The Willie", published a few of their
poems in a mimeo mag. One of my most excruciating memories is of returning to
New York on the bus after spending a night with George drinking beer in
Hackensack. My bladder has never been the same.

Dear
Al:
Research
needs to be done on every Pres... election from Carter on...
in that: The prices on fuel
have gone through the roof after each and every one.
This is not a phenomenon from lack of supply, lack of refineries, sudden
demand or any other excuse... My brother worked for Exxon for 20 plus years, and
will discredit all excuses for high prices except for, your favorite,
Republicants recouping their political donation expenses!
